Online Shopping - Clothes

There are so many random online shopping sites I come across. Here's a couple worth noting:

If you want designer clothes (Calvin Klein, Burberry Prorsum, etc) for lower prices:
http://www.theoutnet.com/

For a non-sketchy forum for exchanging clothes, both buying and selling in their marketplace:
http://us.asos.com/

Super cheap, but maybe not as fashionable and good quality clothing. But I ordered a rare find dress the other day and was pleased with the results, you just have to look a little:

Nobel Peace Prize

I think most people have heard of the Nobel Peace Prize. But I don't really know too much about it.
The reason I thought perhaps I should explore just what it is and how it's awarded was because of this very brief bio on Irena Sendler (pictured below) who saved 2500 kids and infants during WWII and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize...but did not win. Check out the link for why.

So this is the official Nobel Prize Site

Just a quick run down:
  • 93 Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded since 1901.
  • "If none of the works under consideration is found to be of the importance indicated in the first paragraph, the prize money shall be reserved until the following year."
  • Average age: 62, youngest: 32, oldest: 87
  • The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for selecting the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. The Committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) [this I don't get...why do the Norwegians get to decide this? I'm sure they're lovely people but I would have thought it would be some committee composed of people from all over the world]
  • And aside from the Nobel Peace Prize, there are also: Nobel Prize in Physics, Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Nobel Prize in Literature, Prize in Economic Sciences
  • Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award

Globes Anyone?

There's just something so refreshingly...OLD world about a globe.
Look at this classy thing:

You can hang it as a light...or us it as a potpurri bowl.

This is more of a map, but come on, we all want this sweater. It's better than all those tacky Christmas sweaters combined.

You can wear it on your neck.

Or your wrist.

Or your finger.

Yepp...this is a bar...inside a globe.

Globes are just timeless.

Beautiful isn't it?

This article is more about men and their watches, but fascinating for me all the same. Didn't really think about it, but yeah, watches are one piece of acceptible men's jewelry. And it really does make a difference what type of watch you strap on.

Matheus Lopes

I'm always a huge fan of artists that can draw/paint/create art well. I would say draw better than me, but that's not saying too much. Matheus Lopes is a young illustrator from Brazil. Check out his website here.

Not Normal

No one is normal, we're all a little weird. And also, normal is a relative, subjective definition. Besides, why would you ever want to be normal?

Cardboard Signs

There something humbling and I dare even say sentimental about a cardboard sign. It's so plain and brown, folded in whatever way, and frayed at the edges. The simplicity of marker on cardboard attracts me unlike any other fancy, flashy neon sign. It's dull and it's boring. Yet I care to read it more than anything else. Why? Well I think it's the idea of human touch, that some person handwrote a message on that cardboard. It's almost like a piece of them, a glimpse into their desires and goals.

Yes that means homeless and begging signs too.
Check out some clever ones here

And all those free hugs signs!!

Eiffel Tower Trinkets

I'm not sure what it is about the Eiffel Tower, but everyone loves it. It's that one landmark, monument, tourist place, however you think of it, that seems to resonate in people's mind. It's a symbol of Europe, more so than Big Ben, the Coliseum, the Louvre, etc. It's a representation of romance, of elegance, of a historical beauty that continues to hold the same allure. Therefore, more than any other item, I have seem the Eiffel Tower in so many vintage pastel photos, and as the model for so many trinkets.

The Experience Economy

So I just attended a talk by, James H. Gilmore, one of the authors of The Experience Economy and he pitched a brilliant idea for solving childhood obesity. Campaign no more Michelle. He said "What if we had to pay a monthly fee for how many calories you can leave the grocery store with within a month?" So maybe on the last day of the month you try and leave with a rotisserie chicken and some apple pie but you only have enough for a stalk of celery. What an idea :)

Weird Inventions

Some people come up with the craziest things. I look at some inventions and think "some guy's a genius, why didn't I think of this?" and then I look at other inventions and think "now that's just dumb, who would use this." But either way, whether I'm awed or shaking my head, ridiculous gadgets are fun to look at.

Tea Tea Tea

Everyone loves tea. At least I do.

It just seems like when you're drinking tea, all is calm, all is well. You should never be so busy in your life that you don't have time to sit down, relax, and enjoy a cup of good hot tea. If you live in Charlottesville, definitely go check out the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar in the Downtown Mall. If not, hopefully your town has a tea place half as cool, which is high doubtful. :)

Keep Calm and Rape A Lot Shirt Pulled

So what concerns me is not so much that there is one shirt that encourages rape, but that there is whole line of them with different colors and words on the left there. Also makes me wonder who would search "keep calm and rape" on Amazon anyway. Well either way, its gone now apparently, sorry anyone who wanted this shirt. (:

Chicmuse.com

I think this is a blog...with it's own web address I guess. Some people are fancy like that. Anyway, it's worth following/browsing through if you're interested in fashion and stuff like that. I know I am :)

It would seem that the blog is by model Denni Elias. Most of the photos are of her shoots, and she works it in those photos. Here's one below:

Wealthy Inequality Video

This is a must see video on the wealth inequality in the United States. It's shocking to see what we think the wealth distribution is, what we think it should be, and what it actually is.

Photographer: Kenvin Pinardy

One of my favorite photographers is Kevin Pinardy. I'm not quite sure how he does it, but he captures these beautiful women in these picturesque photos that almost look like paintings. His photos are absolutely beautiful and emote a certain elegance and vulnerability. He has taken several underwater photographs that are equally moving.

Teacup Ring

I LOVE TEA. It's my guilty pleasure, slash not so guilty because I don't feel guilty enjoying tea in my own company or with a company of friends. In fact, when I am in charge of my own company (cause this is happening of course) I will probably get my intern to bring me a tray of tea every morning, who needs coffee? But this teacup ring is absolutely adorable. I want it.

New Silicone Rubber?

So some physics professor at UVA is developing a silicone rubber. Basically the material is both "rigid and fluid", being able to conform to the shape of something while supporting it at the same time. It's potential uses are fixing wobbly tables, becoming shoe insoles, handle material (ooo it can conform to your hand), packaging tape, sporting goods, etc. It's pretty cool actually. Check out the article here if you wanna learn more:

Travel Spot

I definitely want to travel to as many places as possible in my lifetime, but of course I won't be able to get to everywhere with the limited time and money I possess. But I have decided on the one place I would like to have my honeymoon...Santorini, Greece. With its blue and white architecture and seaside location, it's a perfect vacation spot for two lovers.

Negative Emotions Affect Health?

Check this out. Apparently all these negative emotions can actually result in physical damage...well that kinda sucks. I mean as if feeling these terrible emotions didn't suck already, it also causes harm in other ways. Well, guess we all have to try and be more positive and brave.

Humans of New York

A photographer worth checking out is Brandon of Humans of New York or HONY
http://www.humansofnewyork.com/

He captures some of the most quirky and bold characters that one can find on the streets of a city such as NYC. These people are each unique with a story to tell, and indeed Brandon provides a a very personal caption to explain the picture. But the photographs themselves tell a story that need not be said. You should all definitely check it out. Below are just some of my favorites:
